Secret of Waterwhistle Part 1

Arthur Ness is a lonely, scared, young boy - evacuated from wartime London during the Blitz to live in the countryside village of Waterwhistle. There's a lot for him to get used to - the fields, the farm animals, the quiet.

But the more Arthur explores his new home, the more it becomes evident that the village's strangeness may not all be in his mind. It becomes more and more apparent that his host – the frightening Lady Eris – may be much more than she seems. Is she somehow responsible for the village’s dark silence?

Arthur has no idea what one, small, scared child can do against what appears to be such powerful magic. But then he is called on by a mysterious, feline visitor – with an offer that promises to open a world of excitement and adventure in the far off land of Arilon. Arthur finds he may just have a chance to challenge Lady Eris and save Waterwhistle from its mysterious fate after all. That is, if he can overcome his own fears…

What others have said about 'Arthur Ness and the Secret of Waterwhistle Part 1';

I liked how in the first two chapters (‘The Big House at the End of the Village’ and ‘Lady Eris’) it was in Arthur’s point of view but in the third chapter (‘Out of the Tapestry’) it was in the cat’s point of view. I also enjoyed how you made up the names for the bad creatures. I didn’t have anything I didn’t like! – Jocelyne

Your book is really lovely, especially your beginning and middle and end. I really love your story very much. Thanks for your story – Fola

Personally, I thought it was brilliant! The plot really hooked me in. It ended with great suspense but the rest was exciting as well. I thought enough things happened and I loved how it was in history and not in the modern day.
I liked how Arthur was scared of everything but conquered it when he was escaping Lady Eris. The Cat was a very different character. He helped Arthur and was in hiding (which I thought was brilliant!)
Lady Eris and her creatures were brilliant. They weren’t too scary or too boring.
Yes, I definitely want to read the next bit. When this comes out, I will be one of the first to run to Lowdham book shop and request they have it! - Anna King

I think that this book was very exciting and I really liked it. Lots of things happen so I didn’t get bored. I thought that the best part was when Arthur was being chased by the creatures. I really want to find out what happens next. – Murray Green

I like the story so far, it was full of action and a lot of good ideas and characters. Lady Eris’ creatures are good and I like the Cat because he was brave and very cunning, also he could talk. 9/10 good so far – Joe Houghton

This is the start of a very exciting and interesting story. There is constant suspense. I would like to read the rest of the book and find out what happens to Arthur, an amazing character.
The mystery of the Cat made the story even more interesting and made me want to read on to find out more about the Cat.
I liked the way that the villagers’ behaviour was unexplained at first; another thing that made me want to continue reading.

I thought the story was very exciting and you could follow the plot well. I thought the cat was described well and was quite humourous. Lady Eris and her creatures were described well which made them sound scary. I really want to find out what happens next. 9/10 – Sam Houghton, Age 11
